Material Cost Differentiation (MCD) Project Update (May 2019)

The project’s Material Category Test to identify how many unique material categories are required to properly measure material characteristics’ influence on the cost of recycling system activities is nearly complete.

The test gathered five 10-tonne samples of packaging and printed paper and four of the samples were run through a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to simulate the conceptual MCD system.  The project consultant, Resource Recycling System (RRS), observed how materials flowed through the MRF sorting system.  These sorted materials were then transported to a facility where further manual sorting was completed by RRS and the CSSA project team to identify and weigh the individual materials.

Analysis of the test results will guide recommendations for the material categories to be used for all other measurement studies defined by the project. In the coming months, the results will be presented to the Steward Consultation Committee so that impacts to steward reporting categories can be evaluated.
