2017 Annual Reports

CSSA is pleased to share with you the recently published 2017 annual reports for Recycle BC, Multi-Material Stewardship Western (MMSW), Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba (MMSM), Stewardship Ontario and Automotive Materials Stewardship (AMS).
The reports showcase each program’s performance, financials, new recycling initiatives and accomplishments over the last year.
Thank you for your continued support and commitment to environmental sustainability throughout 2017. We look forward to working with all our partners to help advance recycling achievements throughout 2018.

Recycle BC

2017 Highlights:

  • Launched our new brand in March 2017 to become Recycle BC.
  • Over 174,000 tonnes of Recycle BC’s packaging and paper product was collected, amounting to a recovery rate of 75%.
  • 1.39 million BC households in 156 communities had access to Recycle BC curbside or multi-family services.
  • Over 1.8 million BC households had access to curbside, multi-family or depot services.
  • 98% of households had depot access.
  • Recycle BC on-boarded the communities of Kamloops, Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack and Comox.
  • On July 1, 2017, Recycle BC added the Boundary Region of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) to its direct service operations.

2017 Highlights:

  • Over 41,200 tonnes of waste packaging and paper collected across Saskatchewan, resulting in a recovery rate of 73%.
  • 49 kilograms per capita collected.
  • 481 service agreements with municipalities, Regional Waste Authorities and First Nations Communities.
  • 83% of Saskatchewan households received packaging and paper recycling services.

2017 Highlights:
  • Total tonnes recovered remained steady from the previous year with 85,259.3 tonnes of packaging and printed paper collected in 2017.
  • 142 total number of municipalities and other partners that are part of the MMSM program.
  • 91.5% of Manitoba’s population has access to a residential recycling program.
  • The number of single-use bags used by consumers went down again in 2017.
  • Results of MMSM’s 2017 consumer research found that program awareness rose to 43%.

Stewardship Ontario

2017 Highlights:
  • Performed above the government-mandated target with a 62.4% recycling rate.
  • Over 836,200 tonnes of PPP was recycled.
  • Over 11,400 tonnes of hazardous waste was collected.
  • Over 94% of Ontario’s households had access to the Blue Box program.
  • Over 18,850 locations available for residents to dispose of their hazardous or special waste materials.

2017 Highlights:
  • Smoothly launched on April 1, 2017 with no disruption to supply chain.
  • 131 members had registered with the program.
  • Achieved and exceeded all collection targets and all recycling targets its first year of operations.
  • Over 1,800 tonnes of antifreeze was recycled.
  • Over 2,100 tonnes of oil containers were recycled.
  • Over 4,200 tonnes of oil filters were recycled.
