2016 Annual Reports

CSSA is pleased to share with you the recently published 2016 annual reports for Recycle BC, Multi-Material Stewardship Western (MMSW), Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba (MMSM) and Stewardship Ontario.

The reports showcase each program’s performance, financials, new recycling initiatives and accomplishments over the last year.

Recycle BC

2016 Highlights:

  • Over 185,000 tonnes of packaging and printed paper was collected representing a recovery rate of 78%.
  • Over 1.27 million BC households in 154 communities had access to Recycle BC curbside or multi-family services.
  • Over 1.8 million BC households had access to curbside, multi-family or depot services including 98% of households having depot access.
  • Recycle BC expanded the communities it directly services, taking over recycling services in the City of Vancouver and the City of Pitt Meadows.
  • A nine-month Streetscape pilot project was launched in partnership with the City of Vancouver.

2016 Highlights:

  • Over 36,600 tonnes collected across Saskatchewan, representing a recovery rate of 62%.
  • 44.4 kilograms collected per capita.
  • Executed funding agreements with 454 municipalities, Regional Waste Authorities and First Nations communities.
  • 82% of Saskatchewan households received packaging and paper recycling services.

2016 Highlights:

  • 4% increase in tonnes collected by municipalities with over 86,500 tonnes collected across Manitoba.
  • 65.4% recovery rate, a steady increase of 13.4% since 2010.
  • 71.8 kilograms collected per capita.
  • Three new municipal partners were added.
  • 94.3% of Manitobans have access to a residential recycling program.
  • 10% increase in brand awareness.

Stewardship Ontario

2016 Highlights:

  • Continued to perform above the government-mandated target with a 64% recycling rate.
  • Over 852,400 tonnes of PPP was recycled.
  • Over 20,200 tonnes of hazardous waste was collected.
  • 98% of Ontario households had access to the Blue Box program.
  • Over 18,800 locations were available for consumers to safely dispose of household hazardous waste materials.

Material Cost Differentiation Project Gets Green Light

At their Q2 meetings, Recycle BC, MMSW, MMSM and Stewardship Ontario’s Board of Directors approved the Material Cost Differentiation (MCD) Project Charter. With their support, the project is now underway.

In Q4 of 2016, each of the four Boards was asked to assign a delegate to the Guiding Principle Working Group (GPWG). The selected members include: Bob Chant, Loblaw (Recycle BC), Christine Bomé, Walmart (MMSW), Neil Antymis, PepsiCo (MMSM) and John Coyne, Unilever (Stewardship Ontario).The GPWG was formed to determine principles for the MCD Project to help the project team identify the relevant conditions to consider when measuring material specific cost impacts.
